    Lock & Co. is the oldest millinery in the world, the 34th oldest family business in the world and is the holder of a royal warrant. Their store has been located at 6 St James’s Street since 1765. The company was founded in 1676 by Robert Davis. His son Charles continued the business and took James Lock (1731–1806) as an apprentice in 1747. James later married Charles Davis’s only daughter, Mary. When Davis died in 1759, James Lock inherited the company from his former teacher. The Lock family and the descendants of James still own and run the company today. As an anecdote, the company is responsible for the origin of the bowler hat.

    Vintage top hat with a grey cup and black ribbon. The top hat is signed by “WOODROW, PICCADILLY, LONDON.” Size 56,5. Woodrow, was a milling company based at 46 Piccadilly Street London. They also had locations at 42 Cornhill in London, as well as Manchester, Liverpool, Glasgow and Dublin. Woodrow made a variety of hats and they were not only distributed around the British Islands but had international circulation. An advertisement in Australia’s Sydney Mail on September 4, 1935 read: ‘Woodrow hats are British. Made with the best quality English and Scottish skins. Obtainable for hatters and first-class men’s stores. The ad also stated that the hats were issued with a royal order by King George V.

    Top hat signed by “TRESS & Co. LONDON”. Vintage top hat with a black cup. The top hat is signed by “TRESS & Co. LONDON”. Size 56. Tress & Co. was founded by Cooper Tress Snr. (1787-1869), son of William Tress and Sarah Clifford of Upchurch, Kent, England. He was joined in the company by his son, Cooper Tress Jnr. and later by Cooper Tress Jnr’s children, Sidney Cooper Tress and Herbert Charles Tress. The company was active in England for over a hundred years, established in 1846 and finally sold to Christy’s in 1953. They closed the place of Stamford St., Southwark, where the Mad Hatter Hotel stands today. The firm Tress & Co. was very prosperous and known throughout the world. Their were awarded with the Prize Medals, Paris 1855 and 1867, London 1862, Philadelphia 1876 and Sydney 1879 with the trademark in Great Britain. I believe the company was also located in Luton and Stamford St., London.
