    Wicker picnic basket manufactured by GW Scott & Sons. Late 19th century wicker picnic basket manufactured by GW Scott & Sons. The lids are lined inside in green leather, the upper one shows the manufacturer’s signatura. Includes a leather strap for closure and a wicker top handle. It is made up of a kettle, a stove, a sandwich maker, a box of sugar and tea, a bottle foralcohol or oil and two silver tea spoons. GW Scott and Sons was a manufacturer of luxury basketry and leather goods founded in 1661 in the city of London, England, in the United Kingdom. The company stopped production in 1967. GW Scott and Sons opened their first store in London, England in 1661. They were forced to relocate their company due to fire damage during the Great Fire of London. They moved first to Old Compton Street and then to Charing Cross Road in the central part of the city. The company is probably best known for developing the modern shape of the picnic basket, which was unveiled in 1851 at the “Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations” held at the Crystal Palace in Hyde Park, London. The first of many world fair exhibitions during the Victorian era. They also achieved some international fame when GW Scott and Sons created 30-foot-tall sculptures that decorated the mall’s parade route for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in addition to making the cribs used by the monarchy. A part from making special items for the British Royal Family and their residences (including silver baskets for Buckingham Palace), the company was also contracted by the government during World War II to make trunks and furniture for the army and double obstacles for parachutes dropped by the Royal Air Force Airborne Division.

The watch works and contains a key to wind it. This particular watch has a fully signed Swiss winding movement that works very well. Movement is protected by a tight-fitting inner cover. The watch itself measures 50mm in diameter, excluding the stem. The case is silver and there are Swiss stamps on the inside of the back cover showing “HS” manufacturer, “n” manufactured in 1868, while the outside is punched and chiseled. In general the outer box is in good condition. The watch glass is in good condition. The signed dial is in good condition. In 1862, when Harriet Samuel took over her father-in-law’s watchmaking business in Liverpool, she renamed the business H Samuel and moved it to Manchester’s Market Street, where she ran the business as a mail order business. Later, Harriet’s son concentrated on the retail sector of the business and the first H Samuel retail store opened in Preston in 1890, closely followed by branches in Rochdale and throughout Lancashire. Since then the company has grown across the country with branches on many British High Streets today.

    The Army and Navy Cooperative Society Ltd. was established on September 15, 1871 and consisted of a group of officers from the army and navy. The objective of the cooperative was to supply goods to its members at the lowest remunerative rates, and it was based on two previous models: the Civil Service Supply Association and the Civil Service Cooperative Society. The society rented part of a distillery premises on Victoria Street, London, which was owned by Vickers & Co, and in February 1872 a grocery store was opened on this place. By 1873, the store offered stationery, curtains, luxury goods, tailoring, groceries, a pharmacy, and even a weapons department. The store was too small for the growing business so the founding members rented a house next to their existing warehouse and purchased one more warehouse on Johnson Place.
